Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami may stay aside from the BNP-led 20-party alliance to remove the obstacle towards forging a national unity, hopes professor Emajuddin Ahmed.

‘Jamaat won’t remain silent stubbornly to protect the national interest. They may stay aside (from 20-party) applying their good judgment,’ he said.

Emajuddin, an ex-Vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, came up with the remarks at a discussion arranged by Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU), reports UNB.

He said obstruction may come from any quarter towards forging a unity as long as Jamaat is there in the 20-party.

Referring to the Jamaat’s anti-Liberation War role, he said, ‘Most of the current Jamaat leaders and activists were born after the 1971 Liberation War. They are children of this land. There’ll be nothing to oppose, if they acknowledge the Liberation War and tender apology to the nation for the misdeeds of their predecessors.’

Welcoming BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s call for forming a national unity irrespective of party and opinion, Emajuddin said forging a nation unity is vital under the current situation of the country.

‘I think it’s a great opportunity for BNP to form a national unity. It’s also a movement. The BNP chairperson should now visit all divisional cities. We’ll get back everything we have lost over the last eight years if this movement can make a success.’

Mentioning that the Prime Minster should have taken the step for the national unity, he said she should quit as she has failed to unite the nation.
