3 Jamalpur war criminals get death sentence, life term for 5 others
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Monday sentenced three Jamalpur ‘Al-Badr men’ to death and five others to life imprisonment for their crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
The tribunal handed out capital punishment to Ashraf Hossain, Abdul Mannan, and Abdul Bari.
Five others — Advocate Shamsul Alam alias Badar Bhai, former ameer of Jamalpur district unit Jamaat-e-Islami, SM Yusuf Ali, Prof Sharif Ahmed alias Sharif Hossain, Harun and Abul Hashem — were handed life imprisonment.
The three-member bench of the tribunal, headed by Justice Anwarul Haq, delivered the verdict at about 11:30am. Justice Shahinur Islam and Justice Mohammad Suhrawardi are the two other members of the bench.
Earlier the same bench on Sunday fixed the date for the delivery of the judgment.
On June 19, closing the law-point arguments from both sides in the trial, the ICT kept pending its verdict for any day.
Of the convicts, Advocate Shamsul Alam and Yusuf Ali are now in jail while the others are fugitive.
A total of 40 witnesses have testified before the court during the trial.
Police arrested Shamsul and Yusuf Ali from different parts of Jamalpur following arrest warrants issued by the tribunal on March 3, 2015 against the eight war crimes accused.
