A housewife was strangulated to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at Ghiba village of Benapole on Monday night.

The deceased is identified as Shefali Khatun Shefa, 20, wife of Shariful Islam Kalu of the same village.

Benapole Port Police Station officer-in-charge Apurba Hasan said on information from local people, police went to the spot, recovered the hanging body of Shefa and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Badal Hossain, father of the deceased, claimed Shariful had been putting pressure on Shefa for dowry since after their marriage.

They provided Tk 3 lakh to Shariful in two terms.

Whenever Shefa refused to meet his demand any further, he inflicted torture on her, reports UNB.

Shariful beat Shefa mercilessly about 11:30pm as she refused to meet a fresh such demand he made recently.

At one stage of altercation over the issue, Shariful strangled her and later hung the body to prove that she had committed suicide.

Shariful and his family members went into hiding after the incident.

A case was filed in this connection.
