Buriganga trawler capsize death toll leaps to 16

Narayanganj: The death tolls from Thursday’s trawler capsize in the River Buriganga at Aliganj Ghat in South Keraniganj rose to 16 with the recovery of another five bodies from the river on Saturday.
Three of the deceased were Abdus Samad, son of late Wahed Ali, Habib, son of Abdul Aziz, and Kazol, son of Manik Miah, residents of Lalbagh Shahidnagar area of Dhaka while identities of two other could not be known immediately.
Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defense deputy director Mamtaj Uddin said the five bodies were recovered from the river in the morning.
Earlier, the body of Alamgir Hossain, son of Kurban Ali of Lalbagh area of the capital, was recovered from the river on Friday evening.
The body of Jamila Khatun, wife of late Abdur Rashid of Lalbagh in the capital, was recovered from the river at about 10:00am on Friday while that of Rasel, 22, son of Rajkumar of Shahinnagar, in the afternoon.
Earlier, divers recovered bodies of eight passengers of the trawler from the river on Thursday.
The trawler coming from Beltali of Chandpur sank in the river after being hit by a sand-laden trawler at about 11:45am on Thursday.
Most of the passengers managed to swim ashore or were rescued while several others went missing.
Meanwhile, police seized the bulkhead ‘Sathibul Bahar-2’ responsible for the accident from Baktabalighat in Narayanganj on Thursday night, said officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj Police Station Jamal Uddin Mir.
On the other hand, a case was filed in connection with the trawler capsize.
Sub-inspector Sohrab Hossain of the police station filed the case on Thursday night.
