Dhaka: The High Court will deliver its verdict on Thursday on the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) appeal against a lower court verdict that acquitted BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case.

The court will also deliver judgment on another appeal filed by Tarique’s friend and business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun against the trial court verdict that had sentenced him to seven years’ imprisonment in the same case, reports UNB.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain on Wednesday fixed the date for the delivery of the judgment, said ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan.

Earlier on 16 June, the bench kept pending its verdicts to be delivered any day after concluding hearing of the appeals.

On 3 January, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan prayed to an HC bench to fix a date for hearing its appeal challenging the acquittal of Tarique, elder son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in the case.

In 2009, the anti-graft watchdog filed the case against Tarique and Giasuddin Al Mamun for illegally sending Tk20.41 crore to Singapore between 2003 and 2007.

On 17 November, 2013, a Dhaka court acquitted Tarique and sentenced Mamun to seven years in jail and fined him Tk40 crore.

On 5 December that year, the ACC appealed to the HC challenging Tarique’s acquittal in the politically sensitive case.

Following the appeal, the HC on 19 January  in 2014 asked the lower court to send the case records to it and ordered Tarique to surrender before the trial court.
