Worsening flood maroons five lakh in Kurigram
Kurigram: More than five lakh people have been marooned as flood situation in the district has worsened further due to onrush of upstream water and incessant rainfall for the last 10 days.
The River Dharala and River Brahmaputra were flowing 106cm and 88cms over the danger lines respectively, said Mahfuzur Rahman, executive engineer of Water Development Board of the district.
According to the district administration, some 712 villages of 55 unions in nine upazilas of the district went under water due to overflow of water from the rivers.
Akbar Ali, chairman of Gunaigach union in Ulipur upazila, said six villages were inundated as gushing water broke a part of an embankment on the River Teesta at Kajirchar point.
Besides, hundreds of houses of Jatrapur union in Sadar upazila were washed away as a dam collapsed with onrushing water entering the area, said Adbul Gafur, chairman of the union.
Many roads have been submerged, snapping all types of vehicular movement across the district.
Around 188 schools of the district have remained closed due to the flooding, said Primary Education Officer of the district Enamul Hoque.
Abdul Muttalib, relief officer of the district, said they have already distributed 400 tonnes of rice and Tk 7.75 lakh among the flood affected people.
