3 madrassa students die of ‘food poisoning’

Narail: Three students died after taking dinner at a madrassa dormitory in Sadar upazila of Narail on Wednesday night.

Around 20 students also fell sick after eating the poisonous meal at about 9:30pm at Jamiatus Sunnah Mohammadia Kaumi Madrassa and Orphanage in Agdia-Shimulia area of the upazila. Among them 12 students are in critical condition.

The deceased are Emamul Haque, son of Bargati village’s Jabbar Hossain, Alif, son of Bhadrabila-Pachuria’s Murad Mia, and Ashraful, son of Shubhargop’s Afsar Sheikh.

Teachers and students of the madrassa said the students fell ill after taking curries of Water Lily stems and Basella leaves. They were taken to Narail Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared a student dead. 

Later, 14 students were shifted to Jessore Medical College Hospital as their conditions deteriorated. Two more students died while shifting to Jessore hospital.

Ibrahim, a student of the madrassa, said around 30 students and some teachers took their dinner together. Some of the students fell sick after taking the meal and three died. 12 students in critical condition were sent to Jessore for better treatment.

Narail Sadar hospital’s physician Anika Rani Saha said primarily it has been believed that three of the students were died due to food poisoning.
