Bogra: A Bogra court on Wednesday sentenced a man to death and five others to life term imprisonment for killing a microbus driver in 2008.

The condemned convict is Zinnat Hossain alias Jewel, while the lifers are Sohel Rana, , Samsul Alam alias Pintu, Tojam, Mehedi Hasan alais Rana, and Manik alias Malek, of Sariakandi upazila.

All of them were tried in absentia.

The court also fined them Tk20,000 each in default to suffer six months more of rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, around 10 young men hired a microbus of Sohel Rana, son of Afzal Hossain of Dakurchok in Sadar upazila, to go to Dhaka on  3 February, 2008.

When the microbus reached Ghughumari area in Sariakandi upazila, the young men killed the driver and left the body with the vehicle there.

Biplab Sardar, brother of the victim, filed a case with Sadar Police.

Police submitted charge sheet against six people on 29 November, 2008.

After examining records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Hafizur Rahman handed down the verdict.
