4 in police custody for interrogation, 10 sued
Dhaka: A case was filed under the Anti-terrorism Act against 10 people, including arrested suspected militant Rakibul Hasan alias Regan, in connection with Tuesday’s overnight drive by a special team of police at Kalyanpur that killed nine suspected militants.
Hasan, who was captured wounded during the operation, is still undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in police custody.
However, a court placed four people who were arrested from the building on Tuesday, on a two-day custody for interrogation.
Inspector (Operation) of Mirpur Model Police Station Mohammad Shahjalal filed the case with the police station under the Anti-terrorism Act 2009 early on Thursday, two days after the incident, said sub-inspector Aklima.
The other absconding accused in the case are Iqbal, Tamim Chowdhury, Ripan, Khalid, Mamun, Manik, Jonayed Khan, Badal and Azadul aias Kabiraj.
Iqbal and arrested Hasan jumped from the building during the drive at Kalyanpur early on Tuesday. Police arrested Hasan with bullet wounds but Iqbal managed to escape.
Contacted, inspector (Investigation) Sajjad Hossain, who was made investigation officer of the case, said apart from Hasan and Iqbal, the names of other eight accused were revealed by Hasan while he was interrogated by police at the DMCH.
The accused reportedly frequented the rented apartment at Kalyanpur, and were involved in militancy activities in various ways, he said.
Metropolitan magistrate Nurun Nahar Yasmin passed the order after sub-inspector Bazlur Rahman of Mirpur Police Station produced them before the court seeking a five-day remand after showing them arrested under section 54 of the CrPC.
Those remanded are Mazharul Islam, Mahfujul Alam, Mominuddin and Jakir Hossain.
Earlier, house owner’s wife Momtaj Parvin was also placed on remand on Wednesday for interrogation.
In his First Information Report (FIR), the plaintiff mentioned that police started the block raid at Road No-5 of Kalyanpur at about 12:10am on Tuesday.
When police knocked at the door of the flat located on the 4th floor of a 6-storey building at house No-53 (Taj Manjil) at about 12:35am, the militants, staying inside the flat, started charging grenades and firing gunshots targeting the police.
Police also retaliated by firing gunshots. SI Deel Mohammad of the police station was injured in that incident.
Police asked the militants to surrender over mike but the militants continued the attack by charging grenades. Finally, a special operation code name ‘Storm-26’ led by Special Weapon And Tactics (SWAT) team of the Detective Branch (DB) was conducted from 5:01 and it continued for around one hours, the FIR said.
In the one-hour long shootout, nine militants, Abdullah, Abu Hakim Nayeem, Tajul Haque Rashik, Aqifuzzaman Khan, Shehjad Rauf, Md Matiur Rahman, Raihan Kabir, Md Zubair Hossain and another unidentified militant, were killed.
