Dhaka: August, the month of mourning when the nation lost greatest leader father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, began on Monday.

A group of disgruntled army officers killed Bangabandhu along with most of his family members on 15 August, 1975.

The ruling Awami League has planned up a month-long programme on the occasion.

The programmes began with a candle-lit vigil at one-minute past zero hours on Sunday in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in Dhaka.

Krishak League will organise a blood-donation campaign at Bangabandhu Bhaban on the first day where AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be present as the chief guest.

Not only the killing of Bangabandhu, the deadly grenade attack on an AL rally and series bomb attack in 63 districts also took place in this month.

On 21 August, 2004, the deadly grenade attack killed 24 people and wounded 500 others.

On 17 August, 2005, around 500 bombs went off at 300 locations in the 63 districts within an half an hour span.
