Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Wednesday alleged that the Supreme Court verdict scrapping the High Court directive to mute its leader Moudud Ahmed’s Gulshan house is part of a government blueprint to eliminate the opposition.

‘The government in a planned way has taken a strategy to annihilate, cripple and weaken BNP,’ said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a press briefing at BNP’s Naya Paltan central office, he further said the verdict against Moudud has demonstrated that the government’s main intention is not to curb militancy and restore democracy.

‘Their main motive is to stay in power by any means and they won’t hesitate to eliminate the opposition and the process is on. We strongly condemn this process,’ he said.

The BNP secretary general also alleged that the government is trying to keep BNP away from politics by resorting to ‘false’ cases and repressive acts.

‘We urge the government to come to the path of democracy shunning its destructive way,’ he added.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday scrapped the possession of a house by BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed at Holding No 159 in Gulshan 2 area of the capital.
