BRAC to pay Tk 404.20 crore due income tax

Dhaka: BRAC, the world’s largest non-government organisation based in Bangladesh, has been ordered by the Supreme Court to pay Tk 404.20 crore income tax which has remained unpaid for eleven years.
Headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kuma Sinha, a five-member bench of the Appellate Division on Wednesday upheld a government order that had earlier asked BRAC to pay the huge amount of unpaid income tax between 1993-94 and 2011-12 tax years.
Barrister Rokon Uddin and Asaduzzman argued for BRAC during the hearing, while deputy attorney general Rashed Jahangir stood for the government.
Earlier on 14 December 2014, the High Court ordered tax exemption for BRAC mentioning it a charitable organisation, following a tax appeal the non-government organisation had lodged after receiving notices for payment of the due tax from Dhaka deputy tax commissioner officer.
Later the government lodged an appeal against the HC order and today’s verdict was given in favour of it asking BRAC to pay the due tax.
