Cop lynched in N’ganj after ‘drug trader’s’ death during police raid

Narayanganj: A policeman was killed in a mass beating after an alleged drug trader drowned in a pond during a anti-narcotics drive at Noail Raisdia in Sonargaon municipality area on Wednesday, reports UNB.
The deceased are Arifuzzaman Khan, a constable of Sonargaon Police Station and son of late Bazlul Khan of Manikganj, and drug dealer Abdul Matin, 55, son of Moslem Uddin of Noail Raisdia.
Quoting police and locals, UNB reported that sub-inspector Fakhrul along with constable Arifuzzaman arrested Matin from Noail Raisdia area in the evening.
However, the alleged drug dealer jumped into a pond apparently to give to cops a slip.
Arifuzzaman also descended to the pond and indulged in a scuffle with
Matin in the water body. At one stage, Matin drowned.
Angered at the death of Matin, his relatives thrashed the policeman severely, leaving him dead on the spot.
On information, additional police rushed in and took the two bodies to the police station.
Sonargaon police officer-in-charge Shah M Manjur Quader said drug trader Matin drowned in the pond after he jumped into the water body.
He also claimed that Matin’s relatives beat Arifuzzaman to death after he descended to the pond to rescue Matin.
