British Council to reopen soon: Home minister

Dhaka: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Sunday said the British Council (BC), which is now remained closed due to internal construction, would reopen soon.

‘The British Council is remained closed due to their internal construction work and we have many A-level (Advanced Level) and O-level (Ordinary Level) students under the British Council,’ he told newsmen after a call on meeting with British High Commissioner Alison Blake at his ministry office, reports BSS.

A-five member team comprising British high commissioner, counter terrorism and intelligence personnel paid the call on with the home minister and discussed various issues including militant and terrorist attacks and bilateral issue.

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque, Additional Secretary Mustafa Kamal, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion Benzir Ahmed, Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Asaduzzaman Miah, head of Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crime Unit's Deputy Inspector General of Police Monirul Islam were present during the call on.

The minister said the British high commissioner expressed her satisfaction over the government's security measures ensured by the police. ‘The envoy proposed to work together to fight terrorism,’ he said.

Bangladesh, Asaduzzaman said, would take cooperation on information and share experiences regarding terrorism and militancy, adding that he told the envoy that Bangladesh's law enforcement and intelligence agencies have enough capabilities to deal with militancy and terrorism.

‘They are tackling terrorists with keeping their lives at stake,’ he said.

The minister also said people of Bangladesh do not like terrorism, militancy and violence and thousands of students came out on the streets and formed human chain against terrorism and militancy responding to the call of prime minister.

‘People of all strata including journalists, teachers, students, professionals and common people stood in the streets against terrorism and extremism,’ the home minister said.

After the meeting, the British envoy said she made the courtesy call on the honorable home minister and expressed condolence over the loss of lives in terrorist attacks.

‘Our supports for Bangladesh in tackling terrorism would continue. We had a fruitful discussion to this end.’
