Low turns into monsoon depression
Dhaka: The well-marked low formed over the northwest bay and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and southwestern part of Bangladesh moved slightly northwards and rapidly concentrated into a monsoon depression on Tuesday.
Under its influence, steep pressure gradient persists and deep convection is taking place over the north bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, said a Met office special weather bulletin.
Squally weather may affect the maritime ports, north bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, it said.
The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No 3.
The coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Bhola, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to experience wind speed up to 50-60 kph or more in gusts or squalls.
Low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by tidal surge of 3-4 feet height above normal astronomical tide.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to take shelter and remain in shelter till further notice.
