Dhaka: The High Court on Wednesday directed the authorities concerned to conduct a judicial inquiry into the humiliation of headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta in Narayanganj.

An HC bench comprising Justice M Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das asked the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate to submit a judicial inquiry report before the court by November 3.

The court also rejected a probe report submitted by Narayanganj police over the incident, according to a UNB report.

On June 9, the HC ordered the superintendent of police and officer-in-charge of Bandar thana in Narayanganj to submit detailed probe reports by August 4 over the incident.

On May 13, locals beat Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Bandar area of Narayanganj, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

At one stage, local MP AKM Salim Osman forced him to do sit-ups holding his earlobes.

The incident went viral on the social media triggering huge public outcry across the country.

On May 17, the school authorities suspended Shyamal for allegedly making statements criticising religion.

In the face of huge outrage over the suspension of Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, the government on May 19 dissolved the school’s managing committee leading to his automatic reinstatement.
