Hasant shown arrested as evidence found over his link: Police
Dhaka: Former North South University teacher Abul Hasnat Rezaul Karim has been shown arrested in the Gulshan café attack case as the investigators primarily found specific evidence of his involvement, said police.
During interrogation for eight days in police custody, investigators found an indication that Hasnat Karim was involved in the café attack and that is why he was shown arrested in the case, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner (DB) Abdul Baten while talking to reporters at DMP media centre on Sunday, reports UNB.
Hasnat Karim is now being interrogated by Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police for eight more days. He is the first suspect who was shown arrested in the case.
Tahmid Hasib Khan, a Bangladesh-born permanent resident of Canada, was taken on police custody for six more days under Section 54 of the CrPc on Saturday as the investigators have not found any evidence against him yet, the Joint Commissioner (DB) said adding that if he is involvement is found, he will be shown arrested in the case.
Earlier Hasnat, also a businessman, was arrested from Gulshan and Tahmid, a Canadian university student, from Bashundhara Residential Area on 3 August. Later, they were produced before a Dhaka court under Section 54 of the CrPc and the court put them on police custody for eight days each for interrogation.
On completion of interrogation, Hasnat Karim was shown arrested in the Gulshan attack case and was put on an eight-day fresh remand by a court here on Saturday, while Tahmid was put on a six-day fresh remand on the same day.
Hasnat and Tahmid were rescued along with 11 others during the commando operation at the Holey Artisan Bakery at the city's diplomatic zone Gulshan on 2 July following a 12-hour hostage standoff.
