President, PM pay tributes to Bangabandhu
Dhaka: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing floral wreaths at his portrait in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road No 32 in Dhaka South City in the early hours of Monday.
President Abdul Hamid first laid a wreath followed by the Prime Minister marking the 41st martyrdom anniversary of the great leader and the National Mourning Day.
After placing the wreaths, they stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of the Father of the Nation as the bugle played the last post.
A smartly turned out contingent drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force gave a guard of honour on the occasion.
Flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, placed another wreath at the mazar of Bangabandhu on behalf of AL.
Shiekh Hasina is scheduled to reach Tungipara, Gopalganj, the ancestral home of the Father of the Nation, by an Air Force helicopter at about 10:00am.
After her arrival at Tungipara upazila council helipad, she will straight go to the Mausoleum Complex of the Father of the Nation.
The prime minister will then lay wreaths, offer Fateha and take part in a special prayer at the mazar of Bangabandhu.
Sheikh Hasina, also the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu, will attend a milad and doa mahfil on the premises of Bangabandhu’s mazar.
Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, cabinet members, parliament members, central Awami League leaders and high civil and military officials are expected to be present on the occasion.
After joining the state programmes, the prime minister will depart Tungipara for Dhaka.
Earlier in the morning, Sheikh Hasina will place floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi at about 6:30am.
Then the prime minister will go to the Banani graveyard and spread flower petals on the graves of the 15 August carnage, will offer Fateha and attend a munajat there.
Later in the afternoon, Sheikh Hasina will join a milad mahfil to be organised by Bangladesh Mohila Awami League after Asr prayers in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum marking the National Mourning Day.
On the fateful night of August 15 in 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army officers.
Bangabandhu’s wife Fazilatunnessa Mujib, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell and daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosy Jamal were also killed in the bloodbath.
