Noakhali: A young woman died and three people went missing when an engine-run boat capsized in a river at Musapur Closure Ghat in Companyganj upazila on Wednesday due to strong currents.

The deceased was Kamrunnesa Pinky, 18, wife of Zahid of Bijoynagar village in the upazila, reported UNB.

Syed Fazle Rabbi, officer-in-charge of Companyganj Police, said some 40 people were cruising through the Choto Feni River by the boat on a pleasure trip in the afternoon.

At one stage, it sank in the river around 3 pm due to strong currents, leaving three people missing.

Around 15 people managed to swim ashore while locals recovered the body of Pinky.

Divers from Chandpur and Companyganj Fire Service Station rushed in to rescue the missing people, he said, adding that they managed to salvage the sunken boat after one hour of frantic efforts.
