Dhaka: Identities of five militants and their one suspected associate, who were killed in a commando operation in the Holey Artisan Bakery of the capital’s Gulshan after a 12-hour siege on 2 July, have been confirmed through DNA tests.

The militants are Meer Samih Mobassher, Rohan Ibn Imtiaz, Nirbras Islam, Khairul Islam Payel and Shafiqul Islam Uzzal while their suspected associate is Saiful Islam Choukidar, chef of the café, reports UNB.

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan of Police (DMP), said DNA samples of the five militants and the chef have been matched with the samples of their respective family members.

Twenty hostages—nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis—were killed in the 1 July terror attack at the Gulshan restaurant.

Besides, two senior police officers—Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Ahmed Khan and Detective Branch assistant commissioner Robiul Islam—were killed as they tried to rescue the hostages.

All the five gunmen who attacked the café and a chef, suspected to be their associate, were killed during a commando operation next morning to end the hostage crisis.
