John Kerry likely to discuss Bangladesh issue during India tour
Dhaka: Amid its growing importance in the region, Bangladesh issues may also come up ‘significantly’ during US Secretary of State John Kerry’s discussion in India after his Dhaka visit.
Across South Asia, US policy and programmes protect US interests and create the conditions for growth and security and naturally a brief on his Bangladesh discussions will come up during his discussion in India, said a diplomatic official.
Secretary Kerry will travel to New Delhi from Dhaka for meetings with senior Indian officials after completing Dhaka visit, according to US Department of State.
South Asia is a region with powerful potential, the source said adding that India is leading the South Asia and India’s views are important to the US.
Though India, having strong relations with India, has its own position to dealing with challenges of the region, including security related ones, the US wants to work together with India to maintain peace and stability in the South Asia, said another source.
US’ core regional strategy is predicated on increased growth and connectivity, which provides the best opportunity of dramatically improving the lives of South Asians of every stripe, according US document.
Together the United States and Bangladesh continue to grow security partnership, which provides regional and global security and seeks to prevent the scourge of extremism.
Meanwhile, a foreign ministry official told UNB that the US Secretary of State will carry the message of ‘deepening’ ties with Bangladesh and he will focus on ‘strengthening’ longstanding bilateral partnership on democracy, development, security and human rights.
He will highlight the longstanding and broad US-Bangladesh relationship during his Dhaka visit on 29 August.
Announcing the visit officially from Washington on Wednesday, Elizabeth Trudeau, Director, Office of Press, said Secretary Kerry will meet with government officials to discuss growing cooperation on global issues.
On 30 August, the Secretary and US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker will co-chair the second US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue (S&CD).
Secretaries Kerry and Pritzker will be joined by their respective Indian co-chairs, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman, along with members of the US delegation and their Indian counterparts.
The S&CD is the signature mechanism for advancing the United States’ and India’s shared priorities of generating sustainable economic growth, creating jobs, improving the business and investment climate, enhancing livelihoods, and sustaining the rules-based global order.
