Videoconference for court proceedings to avoid prisoner snatching: chief justice
Dhaka: Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Sunday said the proceedings of cases filed against terrorists will be conducted through videoconferencing from respective jails to avoid the risk of any untoward incident during shifting.
“Terrorists are snatched midway by their cohorts while being moved to court from jail. We’ll conduct cases through videoconferencing to overcome it as well as bring dynamism in the judicial process,” he said.
The Chief Justice was addressing a programme marking the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Supreme Court and the a2i Programme of the Prime Minister’s Office on digitising the judiciary.
SC Registrar General Syed Aminul Islam and a2i Programme Director Kabir Bin Anwar signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides, reported UNB.
Sinha noted that a backlog of over 30 lakh cases has crippled the judiciary for running the trial proceedings in the traditional way and under the century-old laws.
He said they were considering introducing a judicial web portal where important information of all the country’s courts will be available with a click.
