Dhaka attack bomb-maker identified: Police
Dhaka: Police identified the bomb maker and supplier, named Sohel Mahfuz, who provided bombs in the terror attack at Gulshan café in Dhaka on 1 July.
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) Chief Monirul Islam during a press conference at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)’s media centre on Friday said Sohel Mahfuz was former member of banned militant organisation Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
Monirul Islam said it has been known that grenades, which were use during the terror attack at Dhaka’s Holy Artisan Bakery café, were delivered by Sohel.
He is also an active member of the newly formed Neo-JMB, said the CTTC chief.
The law-enforcers are now looking for Sohel as he played an important role in Dhaka attack, said Monirul.
Twenty hostages—nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis—were killed in the 1 July terror attack at the Gulshan restaurant.
Besides, two senior police officers—Banani Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Ahmed Khan and Detective Branch assistant commissioner Robiul Islam—were killed as they tried to rescue the hostages.
All the five gunmen who attacked the café and a chef, suspected to be their associate, were killed during a commando operation next morning to end the hostage crisis.
