Dhaka: Awami League is conspiring to turn Bangladesh into a failed and militant state like Afghanistan, Syria, and Libya, alleges Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

‘We can't allow anyone to make Bangladesh a failed and militant state. We want to brand it as a liberal democratic country, and we're working on it,’ said Fakhrul.

He came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh arranged by Uttaranchal Chhatra Forum, marking BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman's 9th jail release day.

Accusing the government of making various issues from time to time to confuse people, the BNP leader said, ‘The government has now got caught up in its own trap of militancy. It used to talk about militancy and brand BNP and others as militants. Militancy has now emerged, and many people are saying it has international link.’

He also alleged that the government is pampering militancy as it is killing suspected militants in a gun battle instead of putting them on trial and collecting information from them.

The BNP leader said a move is on to promptly convict BNP leaders and activists to remove them from politics.

Fakhrul called upon BNP leaders and activists reach out to people by visiting every locality for creating awareness and democratic values among them to put up a strong resistance against the government's undemocratic move.

‘We won't be able to resolve political crisis by holding such a discussion meeting. We must strengthen our organisation and ensure people's involvement in our movement,’ he observed.
