At least 10 dead in Gazipur factory fire: police
At least 10 people were burned to death and 50 others suffered serious injuries as a garment factory boiler went off near Tongi BSCIC Railway Station on Saturday morning.
Four of the deceased are identified as Subhas of Gopalpur upazila in Tangail, Jahangir of Bhola and Hannan and Edon of Comilla, reports UNB.
Telephone operator of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room Ziaur Rahman said the boiler at ‘Tammako’ garment factory exploded with a big bang at about 6:00am.
Tongi Police Station Officer-in-charge Firoz Talukder said at least 10 people were killed on the spot and 50 suffered injuries in the blast that triggered a huge fire.
Sub-inspector Billal Hossain of the police station said five bodies were taken to Tongi General Hospital.
‘We’ve got confirmation of at least 10 dead. But the toll will go up as the fire is still not under control,’ police inspector Sirajul Islam told AFP.
Among the injured at least 20 people were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On information, 20 fire-fighting units from Joydebpur, Tongi, Tajgaon and Sadar came to the spot and trying to control the fire.
Around 100 people were working when flames tore through the four-storey factory following an explosion in the boiler room at the building in the industrial town of Tongi, just north of the capital Dhaka.
