Dhaka: The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on 19 April submitted formal charge against 8 Jamaat-e-Islami men from Jamalpur, who allegedly carried out gruesome crimes against humanity during the War of Independence.

The prosecution team led by Tapos Kanti Baul submitted the 107-page formal charge against Mohammad Ashraf Hossain, believed to be 64, Prof Sharif Ahmed, in his seventies, Mohammad Abdul Mannan, believed to be 66, Mohammad Abdul Bari, believed to be 62, Mohammad Harun, in his late fifties, Mohammad Abul Hashem, believed to be 65, Advocate Shamsul Haque, in his seventies, and SM Eusuf Ali, believed to be 83, bringing five specific charges against them.

After the submission of the formal charge, the ICT-2 set Tuesday to hold hearing on whether to take the charges into cognizance or not.

Of the eight, Advocate Shamsul Haque and SM Eusuf Ali are in jail as they were arrested on 2 March, minutes after the ICT-2 issued arrest warrant against them.

According to the investigation agency, all the eight are leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and the first six carried out gruesome crimes as Al-Badr men with Ashraf as their leader.
