Road accidents kill 20 in Bangladesh

Dhaka: Twenty people were killed and at least 62 were injured in separate road accidents in Tangail, Sylhet, Jessore, Jhalakathi, Gopalganj, and Rajshahi districts in Bangladesh on Saturday.

 

In Tangail, eleven people were killed and around 40 people injured in separate road accidents, reports UNB.

Five people, including a woman and her son, were killed and 12 more people injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck at Kurni on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in the morning.

Three of the deceased were identified as Rahima Begum, 32, a resident of Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram district, her son Bayzid, 7, and Salma Begum, 24, wife of Mominur Rahman, of Mohadebpur village in Ulipur upazila of Kurigram district.

Officer-in-charge of Gorai Highway Police Station Khalilur Rahman Patwary said a passenger carrying bus was going to Dhaka from Kurigram in the morning.

When the bus reached Kurni, it collided head-on with a Tangail-bound truck at about 7:00am, leaving the woman and the child dead on the spot and 15 other people injured.

The injured were taken to hospital where Salma and two unidentified young men succumbed to their injuries, the OC added.

Meanwhile, four people were killed and 26 others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a bus on Tangail-Mymensingh highway at Ashura in Madhupur upazila on Saturday evening.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Officer-in-charge of Madhupur police station Shafiqul Islam said the Dhaka-bound truck collided with the Mymensingh-bound bus at about 7:00pm, leaving 30 passengers of both vehicles injured.

The injured were rushed to Madhupur upazila health complex were four people succumbed to their injuries.

Besides, two motorcyclists were killed as a microbus hit their vehicle at Analia Bari on the Bangabandhu Bridge connecting road in Kalihati upazila on Saturday morning.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Sergeant Jahangir Alam, in-charge of Elegna Highway Police Station, said two people were going to Dhaka riding a motorcycle in the morning.

When they reached Analia Bari, a microbus, coming from the opposite direction, hit them at about 9:00am, leaving the duo dead on the spot.

 

In Sylhet, four people, including two children, were killed and 15 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Kayasthagram on the Sylhet-Jakiganj road in Golapganj upazila on Saturday morning.

The deceased could not be identified immediately,UNB reported.

Golapganj Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Mir Abdul Naser said the Sylhet-bound bus, coming from Jakiganj, fell into a roadside ditch as the driver of the bus lost his control over the steering at about 11:00am, leaving 19 passengers injured.

The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where four people succumbed to their injuries, the OC added.

 

In Jessore, a teenager was killed and 5-6 people were injured as a human utility vehicle turned turtle at Marua village on the Chougaccha-Barobazar road in Chowgachha upazila on early Saturday.

The deceased is Shohan Ali, 13, a resident of Shalikha village in Shalikha upazila.

Chowgachha Police Station Officer-in-charge M Mashiur Rahman said a group of people from Shalikha upazila went to Hajrakhana village in Chowgachha to visit a fair on Friday afternoon.

On early Saturday, they were returning home riding a utility vehicle.

When they reached Marua village, the vehicle overturned as the driver lost control, leaving Shohan dead on the spot and 5/6 others injured.

The injured were taken to Chowgachha Upazila Health Complex.

 

In Jhalakathi, two motorcycle riders were killed and one female rider was injured in a road accident in Pingri area on Pirojpur-Jhalakati road under Rajapur upazila of the district this afternoon, police said.

The victims are Sajib Hawladar of Rajapur upazila, and Khalil of Patuakhali, reports BSS.

Sub Inspector (SI) of Rajapur Thana Abul Kalam Azad said the accident occurred in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a bus in the area, leaving them dead on the spot and wounding the co-rider Sharmin Akter. Sajib along with his brother-in-law Khalil and sister Sharmin Akter were going to Jalakati.

Police seized the bus but its driver managed to escape. A case was filed with concerned police.

 

In Gopalganj, a young man was killed as a bus hit his motorbike in Shalbarat area on Rajpat-Muksudpur road under Kashiani upazila of the district this morning, reports BSS.

The deceased is Sohel Mullah, 22, son of Jalal Mullah, a resident of Kotalipara upazila Sadar.

Police said the accident occurred when a bus hit the motorbike from opposite direction in the area at about 10:00am, leaving motorbike rider Sohel dead on the spot.

Sub inspector of Ramdia police camp Hadi Abdullah confirmed the incident and said police recovered the body and sent it to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital morgue.

 

In Rajshahi, a child aged around five was killed on the spot when an auto-rickshaw hit him at Shapura area under Boalia Police Station at about 1:00pm.

An unnatural death case was filed, police said.
