SC eases convicts’ fine payment procedure
Dhaka: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a circular on the amendment to the Jail Code making the payment procedure of fine by any convict easier.
Under the existing provision of the code, a representative or a relative of any convict requires to submit the fines to the specific court where one is convicted. This made the payment procedure complex for the convicts and their relatives. The amendment was brought to make the payment easier.
‘The Senior Superintendent/Superintendent or a Jailer is not authorised to receive fines offered at the Jail and will refer any persons tendering them to the court which imposed the fine; or, in sessions cases, to the Magistrate of the District where the fine was imposed,’ says the existing section 533 of the Jail Code.
To relieve the convicts of the hassle, the jail authorities on August 2 last sent a letter to the Supreme Court Registrar General.
Later, a five-member committee, headed by High Court Division Registrar Abu Syed Dildar Hossain, was formed to amend the provision at the order of the Chief Justice.
The committee recommended that the fines can by paid by the convict through treasury bond. The full-court meeting of the Supreme Court on September 8 gave its approval to the recommendation, according to the SC circular.
