Dhaka: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said the fitness test of vehicles is being brought under a digital system as the government is going to use modern technology in transport management.

Talking to the service recipients of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) at its Mirpur office, he also said a vehicle inspection centre (VIC) has been set up at Mirpur to this end.

‘The use of technology is set to begin in the country’s transport management as well through the inauguration of VIC on October 30 next,’ he added.

Quader paid a surprise visit to the BRTA office and exchanged views with its service recipients, reports UNB.

He observed that the BRTA services have improved following some recent steps taken by the government. ‘But, middlemen are still active to some extent. We must resolve it, and improve the services further.’

The minister also assured the service recipients that there will be a good progress in transport management if the digital vehicle fitness test is launched replacing the existing manual one.

Transport sector experts have long been advocating for introducing the digital vehicle fitness test as a vehicle’s some features, including brake and steering alignment, cannot be checked properly in manual system.

There is also allegation that some vehicle owners are now managing fitness certificates through underhand dealing with a section of BRTA officials under the manual system.
