Restrictions on cars likely in Dhaka
Dhaka: Car users are going to face difficulties in two cities of Dhaka in near future as the authorities concerned are planning to impose restrictions on the use of the personal vehicles experiencing a great boom in last few years.
At least two roads will be made car-free in the Dhaka North City Corporation by March 2017, revealed the city mayor Annisul Huq on Thursday.
Two roads at Banani and Mirpur will be declared car-free, said the mayor while addressing a programme organised by Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), marking the ‘World Car-free Day’ at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka.
‘We’ll start the practice on a small road near Banani Market…only people will be allowed to walk on the road on that day, no car,’ said Annisul.
He said the system will gradually be extended to Mirpur, Mohammadpur and Gulshan areas.
The mayor reiterated that the government will introduce 3,000 new buses, aiming to develop the city’s mass transport system.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader also spoke on the occasion.
Mentioning that driving on wrong lanes will no longer be tolerated, Quader said a new law will be introduced with a provision of harsher punishment for violators of traffic rules.
The law will control the use of private cars through allowing only one car for one family, he said.
Deputy Director (Acting) of the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) Jakir Hossain Majumder presided over the programme.
