Dhaka: The High Court on Monday ordered Bangladesh Bank (BB) to confiscate the bank account of factory owner of Tampaco Foils which was ravaged by a fire on 10 September, leading to the death of at least 39 people.

An HC bench comprising Justice Mohammad Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order.

The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why the victims of ‘Tampaco Foils’ fire will not be provided with compensation.

The court ordered that the money would be withdrawn from the owner’s bank account only to provide salary and compensation to the workers of the factory.

The court also asked the central bank to submit reports in every two-month interval on which sector the money for the confiscated bank account would be spent.

Earlier the court fixed today to pass its order on a writ petition filed seeking its directives to provide compensation for the victims of the ‘Tampaco Foils’ fire and take necessary steps to arrest those responsible for the incident.

Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), Ain O Salish Kendra and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) filed the writ petition on 19 September.

Thirty nine people were killed and 40 others injured as a devastating fire raged through Tampaco Foils factory fire in Tongi BSCIC Industrial area in the early hours of 10 September.

Two cases were filed in connection with the devastating fire incident.
