Boy reportedly commits suicide after mother takes his phone away

Narail: A 13-year-old schoolboy has reportedly committed suicide after his mother took away his phone as the Class VIII student’s Junior School Certificate exam nears.

Abdur Rahman Shakil, a Narail Municipal High School student, committed suicide by hanging himself with a scarf from the roof in his house at Mirapara at Narail Sadar upazila. 

Shakil’s family said his mother, Amena Begum, on Monday morning prohibited his mobile phone using as she considered that his obsession with mobile phone would harm his studies ahead of JSC exams.

Shakil got upset at this and committed suicide at about 8:00am.

Amena Begum said she saw Shakil hanging as she peeked through a hole in the door of his room. She, along with is another son, broke the door and got inside the room. They took his to Narail Sadar Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.

Hospital’s residential medical officer Belayet Hossain Rony said Abdur Rahman had died before he was taken to the hospital.

Narail police station officer-in-charge Delwar Hossain said a general diary had been filed at the incident. Steps will be taken following investigation, he added.
