Dhaka: Two BNP senior leaders on Monday demanded that the government form the next Election Commission taking opinions from political parties that had representation in parliament in the past instead of a search committee.

‘Those who will form the search committee belong to Awami League and the person the committee will be formed with is also of Awami League. Even those will constitute the Election Commission from the search committee are from the ruling party. They won’t appoint any neutral and brave person,’ said BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy.

He was addressing the first meeting of the newly formed Dhaka district committee of BNP at its central office in Dhaka, reports UNB.

The BNP leader also said there may be people’s trust in the Election Commission if it is formed from a list made by the political parties.

In another programme organised by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal, BNP vice-chairman Hafizuddin Ahmed claimed that there will be a Rakibuddin-like Election Commission if the President constitutes it through the search committee under the Awami League government. ‘That’s why no one of us can expect any fair election from them.’

He also demanded arranging a fair election immediately under a neutral government to get rid of militancy and save Bangladesh from destruction.

Issuing a note of warning, the BNP leader said if people are deprived of their voting rights, fire will engulf the whole country.
