Police say ‘robber’, Family say ‘BNP activist’

Satkhira: An alleged robber was injured in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police at Kumira Motorcycle Stand in Tala on early Saturday.
The injured was Shajahan, believed to be 40, a resident of Dhandia area in the same upazila.
Patkelghata police officer-in-charge Tariqul Islam said a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in the area by placing logs, a team of police launched a drive in the area at about 1:30am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on them, prompting the police to retaliate with firing that triggered a gunfight, leaving Shahjahan injured with bullets.
Police also recovered bullet shells, a machete and some logs from the spot.
There are three murder cases filed against Shahjahan, the OC added.
But Shahjahan’s daughter Taslima said her father is an activist of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
‘My father cultivates lands and we struggle to earn enough food,’ she added.
His father-in-law Abdur Rahman and brother Atiar Sardar said he is not involved in politics but an activist of BNP.
Police picked him up from a tea stall at Dhandiya Ashok intersection at about 4:00pm on Wednesday, they added.
They also claimed police did not admit his brother’s picked.
Later, police recovered injured Shahjahan while his other associates managed to flee the scene.
Injured Shahjahan was admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital under police custody.
