Chittagong: The newborn baby, who was found alive after being declared dead by doctors at a private hospital early Tuesday, finally died at another private hospital in Mehdibagh area of the port city on Wednesday, 34 hours after its birth.

Basu Bandhu Barua, a child specialist of Max Hospital and Diagnostic Limited, pronounced the baby dead in presence of Chittagong Civil Surgeon Azizur Rahman Siddique in the afternoon.

Liakat Ali Khan, managing director of Max Hospital and Diagnostic Limited, said, ‘We’ve tried our best to save the baby girl but efforts went in vain. The body of the baby has been handed over to its parents.’

Earlier, Ridwana Kawsar, assistant dental sergeant of Bandarban Ali Kadam Upazila Health Complex and wife of Nurul Azam, a physician of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, gave birth to the baby girl at Centre for Specialised Care and Research (CSCR) hospital at about 1:00am on Tuesday.

The hospital authorities declared the child dead two hours after its birth.

When the hospital staff took the baby to her mother in a packet with a death certificate, Ridwana insisted to see the baby’s face. As the staff opened the packet, Ridwana saw the baby moving.

Despite Ridwana’s repeated requests, the hospital authorities remained firm on their decision.

Later, Ridwana herself took the baby to Child Care Hospital where doctors found it alive.

The baby was then taken to Max Hospital and Diagnostic Limited for better treatment.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe body, headed by Dr Shah Alam, a child specialist of Chittagong General Hospital, was formed to investigate the incident.

The committee has been asked to submit the report within three working days.
