2 Nigerians among 5 of a ‘fraud gang’ held in Dhaka

Dhaka: Detectives arrested five alleged members of a fraud gang, including two Nigerian, from New Market area in the city on Friday night.

Arrested two Nigerians are— Anayo,29, and Esi aka Henry, 29, and three others are -Md Mynul Karim, 29, Md Nazim Uddin, 37, and Ruhul Amin alias Mithun, 29.

Deputy Commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman said tipped off, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) conducted a drive in the area and arrested the five people at night.

DB sources said one member of the gang introduced himself as Dr Nasir Uddin and contacted with Momtaj Begum, a senior officer of Dutch Bangla Bank Elephant Road branch, online.  

Dr Nasir told Momtaj Begum that he is posted in Lebanon as a physician under UN and wanted to set up a clinic in Bangladesh. At one stage he sent a parcel carrying costly medical instrument.  

Finally, the gangsters collected Tk 21.25 lakh cheating and blackmailing her in various way. When they demanded more Tk 15 lakh, elder brother of Momtaj filed a case with New Market police station in connection with the incident.

Detectives started investigation into the case after it was transferred to DB and after investigation, the five frauds were arrested from New Market area on Friday night.
