Dhaka: Though she resides in Gulshan-2 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will not be able to vote in Tuesday’s city polls.

Khaleda herself disclosed this at her press conference held at her Gulshan office on Sunday.

Replying to a question whether she will go to cast her vote in the city polls, the BNP chief said she is not a voter of the city corporation as she is still a voter of the Dhaka Cantonment area which is out of DNCC’s edge.

When the voter list had been prepared in 2008, Khaleda had been residing in a house allocated by the then Ershad government at Shahid Moinul Road of Dhaka Cantonment after the assassination of her husband former President Ziaur Rahman.

She has been living in a house, ‘Firoza’, at Gulshan 2 since 2010, after the Awami League government cancelled the allocation of the cantonment house.

At the press conference, Khaleda read out a written speech for about 50 minutes and later replied to questions from reporters.

Answering to a question what will be their programme if the elections are not fair and the BNP-supported candidates get defeated, she said they will decide about it after the election results.

Commenting on the ruling party leaders’ assertions that people will cast their votes against BNP protesting the petrol bomb attacks during its three months’ movement, she claimed Awami League men with the help of police carried out the bomb attacks on people to blame the opposition.

‘We think people will give their verdict against the ruling party’s falsehood and propaganda in the polls if they get a chance to cast their votes.’
