Chittagong: A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Chhonkhola village in Satkania upazila of Chittagong early on Sunday.

The deceased is Bashar, in his thirties, a resident of the village, also a supporter of former Jamaat lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury, police said.

The Satkania Police Officer-in-charge Farid said police arrested Bashar from Pukuria village in Banshkhali upazila at about 5:00pm on Saturday.

Based on his information, a team of police conducted a drive in Chhonkhola village to recover arms at about 5:00am on Sunday. The law enforcer took the arrestee along with them.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, associates of Bashar opened fire at them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

Bashar was caught in the line of fire and injured while his associates managed to flee the scene.

Bashar was rushed to Satkania Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Eight policemen were also injured during the gunfight. Two guns, one pistol and three cartridges were recovered from the spot.

Bashar was wanted in 21 cases including those for robbery and subversive activities, the OC added.
