Cops among 5 sued for land grabbing, extortion in Dhaka
Dhaka: A case has been filed against five people, including the officer-in-charge (OC) and two other personnel of Mohammadpur Police, on charge of involvement in land grabbing and extortion.
Advocate Kutubuddin Ahmed, member of Dhaka Bar Association, filed the case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Khurshid Alam’s court against OC Mohammad Jamaluddin Mir, Sub-inspector (SI) M Razib, Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) M Khorshed of Mohammadpur Police Station, M Mamun Hossain, an official of Nur Ali Real State, and Mohammad Shohel.
According to the case statement, family members of Kutubuddin, including his mother, have been living at house in Jafrabad at Sangkar in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area for the last 50 years.
Over the last few years, the family left the house for renovation and shifted to a rented house.
On 9 October last, he returned to his ancestral home at Jafrabad as the renovation work was completed.
However, two of the accused—Mamun and Shohel—stopped him in front of the gate and ordered him not to enter the house without the permission of the OC of Mohammadpur Police Station.
At one stage, the OC, SI and ASI of the police station reached the spot.
Later, SI Razib and ASI Khorshed took Kutubuddin to the garage of the house and beat him up.
The police personnel also demanded Tk 45 lakh from the lawyer in exchange of the house.
As Kutubuddin denied paying the money, the policemen threatened to kill him in a reported gunfight.
Later, Kutubuddin managed Tk 2lakh and gave the money to the OC.
