Dhaka: Newly elected Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said the party attaches high importance to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy to become the future leader of Awami League.

‘We have high hopes and dreams involving him,’ Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, told journalists after a meeting of the party’s newly elected secretaries at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi in Dhaka, reports BSS.

Replying to a query, he said, Joy, the ICT adviser to the Prime Minister, expressed his eagerness to work for the party and country’s people but he did not want to hold any post in the party and so he was not given any organisational post in the Bangladesh Awami League.

AL councillors, grassroots leaders and workers expected Joy much as a responsible leader of the party in the coming days. However, he refused to take any post and position in the party.

Quader said the party will elect maximum 100 assistant secretaries of the AL sub-committee in line with the party constitution.

The meeting on Wednesday chalked out an elaborate programme to observe the historic Jail Killing Day on November 3.

The programs will include: placing wreaths on the graves of four national leaders, killed in Dhaka central Jail on November 3 in 1975, at Banani Graveyard, and a discussion meeting at Krishibid Institution Auditorium at Khamarbari in the afternoon.

A separate programme will also be held in Rajshahi on the occasion.
