Dhaka: BNP on Thursday demanded the government bring those involved in damaging the marble plates of the surrounding design of its founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave to justice.

In a statement, BNP central office spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon said, “We want a fair probe into the incident. We demand the government mete out exemplary punishment to the offenders bringing them to book.”

It also urged the government to reconstruct the damaged part of the structure of Zia’s grave complex.

The party called upon the government to ensure security and dignity of all the graves of the national leaders.

It mentioned that it is the responsibility of the ministry concerned to ensure security and protect dignity of very important graves of Bir Sreshthas.

BNP alleged that the offenders got the chance to carry out the misdeeds at Zia’s grave due to the negligence of duty by the state institution responsible for protecting the security of the grave.

“We hope the government will take seriously the incident of damaging the marble plates of round-shape design of Ziaur Rahman’s grave complex and take action against those involved in it,” the statement reads.
