Plot to kill Joy: SC upholds Mahmudur bail
Dhaka: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld a High Court order that granted bail to acting Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman in a case filed in connection with the plot to abduct and kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the United States.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the state seeking a stay on the order.
Former attorney general AJ Mohammad Ali argued for Mahmudur during the hearing while Attorney General Mahabubey Alam stood for the state.
Tanvir Ahmed Al Amin, another lawyer of Mahmudur Rahman, told reporters that as his client has by now secured bails in all the 70 cases against him, there remains no obstacle for his release.
Earlier on 7 September, the High Court granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman.
Later, the government submitted the petition to the Appellate Division challenging the HC order.
On 18 September, the SC stayed till 30 October the order of bail and sent the stay petition to the Appellate Division for its hearing.
On 9 May this year, a Dhaka court sent Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman to jail in connection with the case.
The case was filed with Paltan Police Station on 3 August, 2015 for attempt to abduct and kill Joy, also the ICT adviser to the Prime Minister.
Police arrested Mahmudur from his Karwan Bazar office on 11 April, 2013.
