Two gun-toting BCL leaders expelled
Dhaka: Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), associate student body of the ruling Awami League, on Monday expelled its two Dhaka South City unit leaders who were seen carrying firearms during a clash in the capital’s Gulistan area on Thursday.
The two leaders—BCL Dhaka South City unit general secretary Sabbir Hossain and Wari Thana unit general secretary Ashiqur Rahman— were expelled from the party for breaching the party discipline, said a press release signed by BCL president Saifur Rahman Sohag and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain.
Ten people, including two Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) employees, were injured in the clash between hawkers and DSCC employees.
The clash ensued when the city corporation men went to conduct an eviction drive at the underground market in Gulistan.
Firearms were used by both sides, witnesses said.
During the clash, Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman were seen with firearms. Some leading newspapers carried a picture showing Sabbir firing and Ashiq preparing to open fire. An official with a wireless set was also seen in the picture.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) asssistant commissioner Shibli Noman said they are trying to arrest the two BCL leaders.
Asked whether the arms are licensed, he said if we can arrest them, we will know whether the arms are legal or illegal.
Paltan Police Station Officer-in-charge Rafiqul Islam said no case has been filed till now.
