Savar: A fire broke out at a cotton storehouse in the Sripur area of Ashulia, outskirts of Dhaka, in the early hours of Thursday.

However, no causalities were reported.

Four units of Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) fire fighters and two units of Kaliakar Fire Service doused the flame after nearly four hours.

The DEPZ fire service official Abdul Hamid said local people called the fire fighters as a fire broke out and soon engulfed the Rafique Mollah’s cotton warehouse at about 1:30am. Later, the fire service units went to the spot and brought the fire under control.

The cotton storehouse’s Manager Kausar said there was no electricity at the warehouse. It has been believed that someone intentionally put the depot on fire. Kausar said they were supposed to send a consignment of cotton from the storehouse.

He said the fire spread fast and burned down all the goods of the store which worth around 30lakh.

The Ashulia police Officer-in-charge Mohasinul Quadir said the reason behind the fire could not be known immediately. Police is working to find out whether the incident was an act of violence.
