11 graft suspects held for ‘irregularities’ in food programme

Dhaka: The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday arrested 11 graft suspects, including three food inspectors, in connection with alleged irregularities in the food-friendly programme.

ACC assistant director of its Dinajpur office Rauful Islam arrested Md Rashidul Islam and Manomali Roy of Nilphamari from Dinajpur, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB.

On October 6, 2016, the ACC filed separate cases against them for allegedly collecting rice at Tk 10 per kg under the food-friendly programme meant for ultra poor though they are not poor.

ACC assistant director Ajoy Kumar Saha arrested food inspectors SM Shahabuddin, Md Shahnewaz and Surajit Day of Chittaging zila food office from Agrabad of the port city for allegedly taking illegal financial facilities from food dealers appointed under the food-friendly programme.

He also arrested two food dealers Syed Md Mahruf and Md Jahangir Alam in connection with the allegation.

ACC assistant director ASM Sajjad Hossain of its Faridpur zila office arrested food dealers Md Shahidul Shikder, Md Feroz Khan, Dabir Talukder and Ali Hossain Khan over alleged irregularities in the food-friendly programme.

On Wednesday, the national anti-graft agency arrested five graft suspects, including a UP chairman and two members, for their alleged involvement in irregularities in the food programme.

On October 25, 2016, the ACC in an official order asked all of its district and divisional offices to take steps to check irregularities in the ongoing food programme.

Ultra-poor families are selected through local public representatives and they are receiving 30kg rice a month.
