Daud Merchant relieved of section 54 charges
Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Thursday exempted Abdur Rauf Daud Merchant, an Indian goon and an associate of mafia don Daud Ibrahim, from the charges under section 54.
Metropolitan Magistrate AKM Moin Uddin passed the order following a petition filed by Golam Rasul, sub-inspector of Detective Branch of police.
An alleged aide of Dubai-based Indian mafia lord Daud Ibrahim, Merchant had been in Bangladesh prison for five years after he trespassed into the country in 2009.
He was rearrested from outside Gazipur's Kashimpur Jail as soon as he was released on bail on December 2, 2014.
The following day, police produced him before a Dhaka court and secured a three-day remand to interrogate him.
Merchant was arrested on May 28, 2009 from Brahmanbarhia.
He had been serving life sentence from 2002 in connection with the film producer Gulshan Kumar killing case.
Mumbai police said he absconded after being released on parole in April 2009 to visit his family in Mumbra, a small town about 40 km from Mumbai.
