Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday night said they will not allow any political party to hold any rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on 7 or 8 November on public security ground.

‘Different political parties have sought permission from us for staging rallies at Suhrawardy Udyan on the same day and same time on November 7 and 8. So, we’ve decided not to allow any party to hold any rally at the venue at that time on security ground,’

Deputy Commissioner (media) of DMP Masudur Rahman told UNB.

Earlier, BNP sought permission for holding a rally Suhrawardy Udyan on 7 November to mark what it says the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

But Awami League leaders threatened to resist it saying 7 November is a day of killing freedom fighters and army officers.

In response, BNP said they will hold the rally by any means asking the ruling party leaders to resist the party if they can.

Backing off its rigid stance on the rally, BNP on Thursday said it has sought permission for staging the programme on 8 November.

Amid political turmoil, soldiers and civilians on 7 November, 1975 jointly freed then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity in Dhaka cantonment, paving the path for Zia to come to power.

While BNP and its alliance celebrate 7 November as the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’, the ruling Awami League and its front organisations consider it as the day of ‘killing of freedom fighters’.
