BNP now wants to hold rally at Nayapaltan
Dhaka: Having denied permission to hold its rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, BNP on Friday sought fresh permission to stage it in front of its Nayapaltan central office on November 8.
Speaking at a programme of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the announcement, reports UNB.
‘You (police) have denied us permission to hold our rally at Suhrawardy Udyan. Now allow us to stage it in front of our party office as we’ve already sought permission for it,’ he said.
On Thursday night, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said they would not allow any political party to hold any rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 7 or 8 on public security ground as some other parties also sought permission to use the venue at the same time.
Earlier, BNP sought permission for holding a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 7 to mark what it says the 'National Revolution and Solidarity Day. But Awami League leaders threatened to resist it saying November 7 is a day of killing freedom fighters and army officers.
In response, BNP said they will hold the rally by any means asking the ruling party leaders to resist it if they can. Backing off its rigid stance on the rally, BNP on Thursday said it has sought permission for staging the programme on November 8.
Earlier in the day, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will seek permission for using an alternative venue to hold their planned rally in the city as police denied them permission to stage it at Suhrawardy Udyan.
Rizvi said police said they have denied BNP permission for using the Suhrawardy Udyan as some other political parties also applied for the venue. ‘Ok, you now permit us to hold the rally in front of our office.’
He assured the police authorities of holding the programme peacefully if they are given permission. ‘We’d staged peaceful programmes there (Nayapaltan) in the past, as well.’
The BNP leader said the government is not allowing BNP to hold the rally as it fears November 7 and public gathering.
He also urged the police to disclose which parties other than BNP sought permission to hold programmes at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 7 and November 8.
