Dhaka: The High Court on Tuesday asked the police super of Jessore to investigate the two years of jailing of a young man by a mobile court in Chougachha upazila for taking drugs.

In the suo moto order following a report published in a vernacular daily, an HC bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah asked the SP to submit a report before it by November 27.

It also asked Executive Magistrate Nargis Parveen, who led the mobile court, to submit a written statement whether the verdict was delivered following the law.

Besides, the court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why the verdict awarded by the mobile court to the youth should not be declared illegal.

The Law and Home secretaries, IGP and Jessore SP have been made respondents to the rule which is returnable in four weeks.

According to the newspaper reports, the mobile court, led by Chougachha upazila nirbahi officer Nargis Parveen, jailed Mahbubur Rahman alias Tito, 23, for two years for taking and possessing drugs.

Deputy Attorney General Tapash Kumar said the mobile court punished the youth although he was not arrested in front of it as the law stipulates that the magistrate has the authority to hold the trial of an incident happens before him or her.
