Narsingdi: Four people were killed, including three in ‘police firing’, during a clash between two groups over establishing supremacy at Sonakandi village in Raipura upazila on Monday that also left 50 people injured.

The deceased were identified as Momen Mia, 17, son of Mongal Mia, Khokon Mia, 20, of Shonakandi village in the upazila, Manik Miah, 25, and Shahjahan Miah, 30, son of Momin Uddin.

Mazharul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Raipura Police Station, said there had been enmity between the two groups - one led by current Awami League-backed chairman of Nilokkhya Union and former chairman Abdul Haque -- over the control of their union.

As a sequel to the enmity, supporters of both the groups locked into an altercation around 10 am. At one stage, they, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked each other, triggering a clash which left 50 people injured. The violent clash then spread to eight villages of the unions.

On information, police went to the spot and fired shots to bring the situation under control, leaving three people dead on the spot, witnesses said.

Besides, Shahjahan Miah being hit by ‘Teta’ (lance) died on the spot.

However, additional police super Hasibul Alam told UNB that none of them was killed in police firing.

Four policemen, including the officer-in-charge of Raipura Police Station, Azharul Islam, were injured in the clash and admitted to the hospital.

Six houses were torched and 10 looted while 300 crude bombs were exploded during the melee.
